Get the look: Meghan Markle's messy bun

The Duchess of Sussex has become known for her perfectly undone messy bun. Here's how to get the look.

Looking to change up your hair in 2019? Instead of making a drastic cut or colour change, why not try out a new hairstyle? We suggest Meghan Markle's signature messy bun—it looks carefree, yet sophisticated.

Now, although the Duchess of Sussex's messy bun looks like she just threw it up effortlessly and perfectly before stepping out the door, there are actually a few key techniques to know to master the 'do.

Below, the simple steps to follow and tools to use to get the look.

Step 1: Part your hair down the middle
With a detangling brush, comb out any knots and tangles and part your hair in the middle of your head, like Meghan Markle does. To achieve a straight part, use the end of a comb or your finger. If you start at the tip of your nose and trace your way up, you will hit the exact middle.

Step 2: Add texture
The key to Meghan Markle's perfectly undone hairstyle is texturizing spray, which is a miracle-worker on fine, flat or thin hair, as it adds volume and body. While many sprays leave the hair feeling gritty and sticky, Electric London's C-5 Volume Liquid Mist basically has a built-in conditioner, which gives the hair a soft and shiny appearance. Before styling, spray it all over the hair to give it the piece-y look, which is necessary for this style.

Step 3: Tie your hair in a bun
With your fingers spread wide, gather your hair back into a not-too-high, not-too-low bun—the key here is not to overthink it, it's supposed to be messy! Tie it with an elastic that will stay put and that matches your shade of hair, like an Invisibobble spiral hair tie, and use bobby pins to help secure the bun.

Step 4: Make it messy
Give the hair at the top of your crown some lift by rubbing a few strands between your thumb and fingers to create some volume. If your hair is the right length, the final touch to achieving Markle's messy bun hairstyle is pulling out a few strands of hair around the face. If the strands are falling straight and flat, twist them around a large-barrel curling iron and hold for only a second or two—don't over-curl! Finish off the look with a bit of light hold hair spray and voilà!
