How to do a daytime-friendly smoky eye

Bring the sultry statement of a dark smoky eye to your workweek with a soft update in warm brown hues.

“A brown or nude smoky eye is softer and more daytime-friendly,” says CoverGirl makeup pro Veronica Chu.

A smoky eye for all skin levels

Low risk: Blend a shade darker than your skin tone in the eyelid crease and under the lash line. Then, wet a brush and smudge the same colour on the top and bottom lash lines. “That creates the smoke,” says Chu.

Moderate: Use a shade darker than your skin tone all over the lid and in the crease. Apply a darker colour to the top and bottom lash lines, then blend so there are no harsh lines between the colours.

All in: Apply a medium tone on the lid and in the crease. Then, use a much lighter colour under the brow bone and in the corner of the eye. Add the darkest colour to the top and bottom lash lines for definition.

Shade tip

You’ll need three shades: a bright highlighting one that’s a little lighter than your skin tone; one a few shades darker than your skin tone; and a deep, dark hue.

The toolbox

When it comes to achieving a smoky eye, pay special attention to your implements. Invest in a soft blending brush, a classic eyeshadow brush and a brush with flat bristles to perfect the look.

EYESHADOW BRUSH: Deposit colour with soft and bushy bristles. This soft, dense brush is great for building intensity gradually. M.A.C Cosmetics 239SH Eye Shader Brush, $30, maccosmetics.ca.

FLATTOP BRUSH Define the lash line with straight bristles. Short, stiff bristles can be used to deposit colour precisely at the lash line. Make Up For Ever Definer Eyeliner Brush 256, $29, sephora.ca.

BLENDING BRUSH Blend, blend, blend with the bristles of this type of brush. The conic shape and soft bristles are the ideal combination to create a blended smoky effect. Giorgio Armani Blending Eye Brush, $56, armani-beauty.ca.
