Splurge vs. Save: Makeup

When it comes to makeup products, how do you get the most bang for your buck? We got the lowdown from the pros about what may be overrated, and what buys are really worth your hard-earned cash.

Splurge

“The largest part of your makeup budget should go into complexion products, because it’s important to use products that are really suited to your individual skin type and tone,” says Martine L’Heureux,
a Montreal-based makeup artist and hairstylist. It can be much easier to find your perfect shade of foundation and concealer using high-end brands, because they tend to have an extensive range that caters to different undertones and skin textures.

It’s also worth it to invest in good-quality, natural bristle brushes for powder products like bronzers and eyeshadows, she says. This is because they offer a smoother, more sheer finish that easily blends on the skin.

“Once you’ve found the right products for your complexion, you can have fun with all kinds of affordable products available in pharmacies,” says L’Heureux. There are all sorts of excellent budget-friendly lipsticks and mascaras that offer the same results as professional brands. For the same reason, there’s no need to break the bank for cream blush, highlighter, eye pencils or liquid eyeshadow, she says.

Budget-friendly synthetic makeup brushes are perfect for applying liquid and cream products, because they aren’t as porous as their natural counterparts, which means less wasted product.
