Bridesmaid dress trends for 2017

Forget a wear-once dress—these bridesmaid dress trends can be worn again and again. They're that pretty!

Chances are you know someone who is either getting married this year or is in a wedding party. Perhaps it’s your own wedding or bridesmaid moment you’re prepping for. The good news? When it comes to what you wear, there’s never been a better time to be a bridesmaid.

We chatted with Patrizia Civitarese, public relations manager at Le Chateau, and Andrea Dineen, the owner of Sash and Bustle Boutique in Toronto, to learn about what’s popular for bridesmaid dresses and accessories now. As Dineen says, "the right bridesmaids dresses can pull the whole wedding vibe together."

Blue dresses

“More and more brides are opting for blue dresses for their bridal party,” says Civitarese. Which is great because blue looks amazing on all skin tones. And brides aren’t sticking just to one tone—everything from navy to cobalt to periwinkle is making the cut.

Prints

“I would love to see more bridesmaids in prints,” says Civitarese. “A print instantly elevates your look from classic to standout!” If mixing and matching prints, remember to have your bridesmaids stick to a certain theme. Think: florals on dark backgrounds, micro-prints or metallic accents. That way the overall look of your bridal party will still be cohesive.

"I would love to see more maids wearing jumpers," says Dineen. "They are so chic and fun—plus not all women love to wear dresses." Though this trend has yet to hit the mainstream, many boutiques and stores are offering bridesmaid jumpers in a range of colours.

Classic blush dresses

“Brides are still loving classic blush tones—they’re feminine and timeless,” says Civitarese. If your wedding look is all about classic romance, you really can’t go wrong with pink.

The choker

The go-to accessory for bridal parties this year? The choker. Which should be no surprise, because brides are all about this accessory as well. This edgy necklace looks particularly great when paired with hairstyles and dresses that lean towards feminine—think tulle, chiffon and soft up-dos.

Red dresses

Red is a bold colour, and brides are starting to be on board. “Red is new on the bridesmaid front,” says Civitarese, “but it’s totally fresh.” Because the colour is so impactful, keep the rest of the colour palette subdued, and stay away from anything too over the top.

Bridesmaids in flats

It used to be taboo to wear flats to a formal event, but ladies are starting to put comfort first. Although you might still see bridesmaids walking down the aisle in heels, a quick switch to formal flats (think metallic, strappy silhouettes and satin finishes) is a great way to give your feet a rest—no plastic flipflops required.

Textured details

Texture is picking up momentum when it comes to bridesmaid dresses this year. Look for dresses that incorporate details like embroidery, jacquard fabrics and metallic touches. Don’t be afraid to be a bit adventurous with your look.

Picking a colour palette or theme, and letting your bridesmaid picking the shade and style

“Fortunately, bridesmaids are no longer obliged to wear the same dress,” says Civitarese. The trend of brides picking out a specific colour and letting bridesmaids choose a silhouette is still going strong. But even better, is a trend that Civitarese hopes to see more of—brides coming up with a palette or moodboard and letting bridesmaids pick the shade and style that works best for their skin tone and body type. "Mixing and matching in a tonal monochromatic way allows the mixing of textures, prints and fabrics," says Dineen. "It can look unique, eclectic and so beautiful!"
