How to find the best sunglasses for your face shape

When it comes to shopping for sunglasses, one size does not always fit all. In fact, finding the right sunglasses is a complex process that requires taking your face shape, features and favourite trends into account. With so many options, finding your best frames can seem like a daunting task. However, with these five expert tips from Terence Lo of Josephson Opticians in Toronto you can embrace the summer in style.

1. Focus on your face shape

The first factor to be aware of when shopping for a new pair of sunglasses is the shape of your face. If you have an oval-shaped face you can really wear any shape of sunglasses; however, Lo recommends making sure that the frames are as broad as or broader than the widest part of your face.

If you have a round face, Lo recommends trying to make your face appear longer and thinner by wearing a rectangular shape or angular narrow shape" of sunglasses. Plus, high or mid-height temples help to create a longer profile."

If your face is square, choose frames that make your face appear softer," he says. Consider frames that are more horizontal than vertical and gently curved narrow styles," he suggests.

2. Get the perfect fit

Like the quintessential little black dress, your most flattering sunglasses should fit flawlessly.

A well-fitted pair should fit snug and not slide down if you move your head around," explains Lo. For sunglasses without nose pads, the fit around the bridge [of the nose] is very important. There should be no visible space or gaps."

3. Take a calculated risk

Try out one of summer’s newest styles while also keeping your features in mind. Sunglasses are a great way to accessorize, so have fun with some of the most popular trends of the season. Lo singles out mixed material sunglasses (especially those that have metal temples and acetate fronts) and round John Lennon–esque frames as two of this summer’s best trends.

4. Rely on the professionals

While many women prefer to shop with a close friend in tow, when it comes to sunglasses Lo also suggests relying on an optician's opinion. Although it is helpful to have a friend’s perspective, an optician will be able to introduce you to the best brands, adjust the fit of your frames and ensure that your sunglasses offer the right amount of sun protection.

5. Look to the past for inspiration

Vintage sunglasses are collectibles and can immediately update your look. Lo proposes trying cat’s-eye frames, which are especially flattering if you have a heart-shaped face. The upswept style will give your features an instant lift while staying on trend.
