How to wear overalls like a grown-up

If you think the words “overalls” and “Dennis the Menace” go together like PB & J, then it probably means you haven’t seen the latest crop of dungarees to hit stores. The new iteration of the classic workman style is often tailored through the hips and legs, or flares out at the knee. When styled right, this one-piece is perfect—and perfectly comfortable—for an afternoon running errands or a girls’ evening out.

3 pairs of overalls
Step 1: Choose your style

Denim overalls—whether short or long—will only ever suit casual, daytime affairs. If you’re hoping to dress up your look, choose a pair of black fitted overalls with a slim cuffed leg, or a longer hem with a flare.

Step 2: Top it off

For the most flattering look, choose a fitted top such as a turtleneck, colourful blouse or classic white tee.

Step 3: Pick shoes and a handbag

If you’re dressing for an afternoon stroll, try slip-on sneakers and a small shoulder bag.  For a more polished look, swap in leather mules and an envelope clutch.

Step 4: Add a bit of personal style.

Have a favourite pair of shades, a cool summer hat or a collection of necklaces that float your boat? Add them to your outfit. Overalls may be on trend, but the look should fit your personality, too.
