Women wore black at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards

This year's Golden Globes red carpet was a little different, as you undoubtedly saw if you tuned in. Many women eschewed colourful and sparkling gowns in favour of black. It is a direct response to the recent slew of men in Hollywood and across all industries that have been accused of sexual assault and harassment and is part of a larger effort called Time's Up. We applaud the women who wore black to draw attention to this cause. Though we'd be remiss if we didn't also mention that when it came to fashion, we had a few favourites. Here are a few women we loved seeing on the 75th annual Golden Globes red carpet, drawing attention to this worthy cause, and looking powerful and bold while doing so.

Claire Foy

Claire Foy is nominated for her role in The Crown, and she sported a simple, but stunning Stella McCartney suit on the red carpet. We love the details here—the double-breasted suit, the sleeve accessorizing and, of course, Foy's slicked back hair and bright red lips.

Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson wore Gucci, (predictably—she loves the brand). While from the front the dress looks sleek and simple with just a little glitter at the waist, the back is adorned with a silver, sparkly bow.

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel put a dark spin on tulle with her strapless nude and black dress by Dior. The entire look is stunning, from her pretty pink lip colour to her diamond earrings. The sweetheart neckline and nude peeking through is perfection.

Octavia Spencer

The hit of sparkle on Spencer's outfit is the perfect touch to a simple silhouette, and the tea-length of this frock by Tadashi Shoji is refreshing in a sea of floor-length gowns. Spencer is nominated for her role in The Shape of Water.

Geena Davis

Geena Davis attended the 75th Golden Globes and reunited with her Thelma & Louise co-star Susan Sarandon as presenters. The 61-year old actor has been fighting for equal representation in Hollywood for years, so she, of course, wore black to show her solidarity with those affected by sexual misconduct and power abuse in the workplace.
Davis wore a spectacular black form-fitted beaded dress by Monique Lhuillier with French lace detailing with a dramatic fringe hemline.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie, who is nominated for her role in I, Tonya, also opted for a Gucci gown, with a very deep v neckline and exaggerated shoulders. The pretty silver floral detailing on the front adds glamour, while simple sandals and a berry lip are classic accessories.

Diana Kruger

Opting for a black dress, the German actress joined other stars who donned black in solidarity of the Time's Up initiative. Kruger looked absolutely stunning in the black dotted Prada gown. The dress even had a cascading shawl (aka a cape), which is a hard sell even for the fashion advanced, but she nailed the complicated look.

Jessica Chastain

Nominated for Best Actress for her work in Molly’s Game, Chastain has been a strong supporter of the Time’s Up movement from the start, so she of course wore black.
Her velvet Armani Privé body-con grown had silver side panels which were accented by her stunning Piaget jewellery.

Viola Davis

On the red carpet, Viola Davis was speaking about the Times Up movement to ABC’s Al Roker. “You’re born being worthy. I think that’s a message a lot of women need to hear… It’s not their fault, and they’re not dirty.”
She was in attendance to present the award for best supporting actor in a motion picture. Davis looked flawless, fit and fabulous in a fitted velvet black dress by Brandon Maxwell accompanied by beautifully layered diamond necklaces, gorgeous copper makeup and a perfectly coifed afro. She slayed!

Emilia Clarke

After years of keeping her natural brunette locks, this was the first red carpet where Clarke embraced her Daenerys Targaryen character on the nominated Game of Thrones and coloured her hair the same the same icy blond. And it looked incredible.
She wore all black to the awards to show support for the Times Up movement, protesting power abuse. The black column Miu Miu column dress features a plunging neckline and a simple bow that sat above her waist. Her sleek centre part paired with a brilliant Harry Winston choker and swipe of pink lipstick was a subtle but strong style statement.

Alison Brie

Alison Brie stunned in the unconventional look. A strapless dress with trousers by Zoulais with Bulgari jewellery and Louboutin shoes, Alison is the perfect picture of edgy and modern, and classy.
