6 (8) oz Bernat Softee Baby #02001 Pink
3.75 mm crochet hook or whichever hook you require to produce the tension given below
Tapestry needle
Five buttons
Sewing needle and matching thread

TENSION FOR SWEATER
9 dc = 5 cm (2 ins)

TENSION FOR HAT
First 3 rnds = 6.5 cm (1-1/2 ins)

To Make Sweater

YOKE:
Starting at neck edge, ch 43 (47).

Row 1: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (beg 3 skipped ch count as 1 dc on foll row), 1 dc in each of next 6 ch, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] -- shell made -- in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 (4) ch, make shell in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 17 ch, make shell in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 (4) ch, make shell in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 8 ch, ch 3 (count as 1 dc on foll row), turn. 53 (57) dc and four shells now in row.

Row 2: * 1 dc in each dc to ch-2 sp of next shell, make shell in ch-2 sp, rep from * 3 times more, 1 dc in each rem dc and in 3rd ch of beg 3 skipped ch, ch 3, turn.

Row 3: * 1 dc in each dc to ch-2 sp of next shell, make shell in ch-2 sp, rep from * 3 times more, 1 dc in each rem dc and in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, ch 3, turn. 85 (89) dc and four shells now in row.

Rows 4 through 5 (6): Rep Row 3. 117 (137) dc and four shells now in row.

Row 6 (7): * 1 dc in each dc to ch-2 sp of next shell, [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] in ch-2 sp, rep from * 3 times more, 1 dc in each rem dc and in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, ch 3, turn. 125 (145) dc and four shells now in row.

Rows 7 (8) through 9 (10): Rep Row 6 (7). 149 (169) dc and four shells now in row.

BODY
Row 1 (right side): * 1 dc in each dc to ch-2 sp of next shell, **yo and insert hook in ch-2 sp, yo and pull up loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook,** skip next 30 (36) dc - armhole made, rep from ** to ** once, yo and draw though all 3 loops on hook, rep from * once more, 1 dc in each rem dc and in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, ch 3, turn. 91 (99) dc now in row.

Row 2: 1 sc in first dc, 1 dc in next dc, * 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc, rep from * to turning ch-3, 1 sc in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 3: * 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc, rep from * across, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: 1 sc in first dc, 1 dc in next sc, * 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc, rep from * to turning ch-3, 1 sc in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 until body from underarm measures 12.5 (15) cm / 5 (6) ins; at end of last row, omit ch 1. Fasten off.

RIGHT SLEEVE:
With right side facing and holding ch-2 sps of armholes with wrong sides together, work through both thicknesses to join in ch-2 sp of last yoke row at underarm.

Row 1 (right side): Ch 2, 1 dc in each dc around, skip beg ch-2, join in first dc, ch 1, turn. 30 (36) dc now in row.

Row 2: 1 sc in joining ch, 1 dc in next st, * 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st, rep from * around, join in first sc, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc on foll row), turn.

Row 3: 1 sc in next st, * 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, rep from * around, join in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, ch 1, turn.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 until sleeve from underarm measures 15 (16.5) cm / 6 (6-1/2) ins, ending with right side row; at end of last row ch 1, do not turn.

Edge sleeve as follows:

Rnd 1 (right side): 1 sc in joining ch and in next st, [draw up loop in each of next 2 sts, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook] - dec made, * sc in each of next 2 sts, make dec, rep from * around, join in first sc.

Rnd 2: *Ch 1, sl st in next st, rep from * around, join in first sl st. Fasten off.

LEFT SLEEVE
Work as for right sleeve.

To Finish:
With right side facing and bottom edge at top; join in first st at upper right-hand corner.

Rnd 1 (right side): Ch 1, 1 sc in joining st and in each st across bottom edge; working along right-front edge in ends of rows: 2 sc in first row, 1 sc in each row to Row 1 of Body; 2 sc in each row to neck edge; 3 sc in first st of right neck edge, 1 sc in each st along right-neck edge, back and left-neck edge to last st, 3 sc in last st; working along left-front edge in ends of rows: 2 sc in each row through Row 1 of body; 1 sc in each row to last row, 2 sc in last row, join in first sc.

Rnd 2: * Ch 1, sl st in next sc, rep from * around, join in first sl st. Fasten off. With tapestry needle, weave in ends on wrong side of work. With sewing needle and thread, sew 5 evenly-spaced buttons down left-front edge of yoke.

For safety's sake: The buttons on this small child's outfit can present choking hazards; periodically check that all buttons are securely sewn on.
