Halloween craft idea: Crochet a mini ghost decoration

This little ghost brings more smiles than spooky shivers. Follow these easy steps to make your own friendly ghost decoration to haunt your halls this Halloween.

You need:

  • Pure wool DK (light worsted) yarn: Head, body, arms, legs: 1/2 x 50g (1 3/4oz) ball – approx 56.5m (62yd) – of cream
  • Safety eyes
  • Fibrefill stuffing
  • Mouth: Black yarn
  • Cape: Piece white cotton fabric
  • Crochet hook size: 4mm (F/5)


Abbreviations

  • Ch chain
  • Dc double crochet
  • Dc2tog *insert hook into next st and draw up a loop; rep from * once, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • Rep repeat
  • Ss slip stitch
  • St(s) stitch(es)


Size
Approximately height: 13cm (51⁄4in)

Directions

Head
Make 2ch, 6dc in second chain from hook.
Round 1: 2dc in each st. (12 sts)
Round 2: *1dc in next st, 2dc in next st;
rep from * to end of round. (18 sts)
Round 3: *1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st;
rep from * to end of round. (24 sts)
Rounds 4–10: 1dc in each st. (24 sts)
Round 11: *1dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog; rep from * to end of round. (18 sts)
Round 12: 1dc in each st. (18 sts)
Round 13: *1dc in next st, dc2tog; rep from
* to end of round. (12 sts)
Fasten off.

Body
Make 2ch, 6dc in second chain from hook.
Round 1: 2dc in each st. (12 sts)
Round 2: *1dc, 2dc in next st; rep from
* to end of round. (18 sts)
Rounds 3–10: 1dc in each st.
Round 11: *1dc in first st, dc2tog; rep from
* to end of round. (12 sts)
Fasten off.

Arms (make 2)
Make 2ch, 6dc in second chain from hook.
Rounds 1–5: 1dc in each st.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Legs (make 2)
Make 2ch, 6dc in second chain from hook.
Rounds 1–4: 1dc in each st.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Making up
Sew in ends. Insert safety eyes and stuff head firmly. Stuff body, pin and sew to head. Pin and sew arms and legs to body (do not stuff). Sew mouth in black yarn.

Cape
Cut a piece of white cotton fabric 10 x 20cm (4 x 8in). Make a small hem along each side. Gather the top and hand sew around neck.
