How to make a cute crocheted Halloween bat

This spooky little bat is the perfect addition to any Halloween decor scheme. Hang it from trees, doorways and any other place that needs some frightfully fabulous decoration.

You need:

  • Pure wool DK (light worsted) yarn:
  • Head, ears, body, wings: 1 x 50g (1 3/4oz) ball – approximately 112.5m (124yd) – of
  • grey-blue (A)
  • Legs, mouth: Small amount of black (B)
  • Safety eyes
  • Fibrefill stuffing
  • Nose: Light brown and black felt
  • Fangs: White felt
  • Crochet hook size: 4mm (F/5)


Abbreviations

  • Ch chain
  • Dc double crochet
  • Dc2tog *insert hook into next st and draw up a loop; rep from * once, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • Dtr double treble
  • Foll follows
  • Htr half treble
  • Rep repeat
  • Ss slip stitch
  • St(s) stitch(es)
  • Tr treble crochet


Size

  • Approximately length: 10cm (4in)
  • Approximately wingspan: 15cm (6in)

Directions:

Head
Using A, make 2ch, 6dc in second ch from hook.
Round 1: 2dc in each st. (12 sts)
Round 2: *1dc in next st, 2dc in next st; rep from * to end of round. (18 sts)
Round 3: *1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st; rep from * to end of round. (24 sts)
Rounds 4–6: 1dc in each st. (24 sts)
Round 7: *1dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog; rep from * to end of round. (18 sts)
Round 8: *1dc in next st, dc2tog; rep from * to end of round. (12 sts)
Insert safety eyes, stuff head.
Round 9: Dc2tog around. (6 sts)
10 Fasten off.

Ears (make 2)
Using A, make 2ch, 3dc in second ch from hook, turn. (3 sts)
Row 1: 1ch, 2dc in first st, 1dc, 1tr, 1dc in next st, 2dc in last st, turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1ch, 2dc in first st, 1dc in each of next
2 sts, 3dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in last st, turn. (11 sts)
Fasten off.

Body
Using A, make 2ch, 6dc in second ch from hook.
Round 1: 2dc in each st. (12 sts)
Round 2: *1dc in next st, 2dc in next st; rep from * to end of round. (18 sts)
Round 3: *1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st; rep from * to end of round. (24 sts)
Rounds 4–9: 1dc in each st. (24 sts)
Round 10: *1dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog; rep from * to end of round. (18 sts)
7 Stuff body.
Round 11: *1dc in next st, dc2tog; rep from
* to end of round. (12 sts)
10 Round 12: Dc2tog around. (6 sts)
11 Fasten off.

Wings (make 2)
Using A, make 2ch, 1dc in first ch.
Row 1: 3dc in st, 1ch. (3 sts)
Row 2: 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 1dc and 1tr in last st, 1ch. (5 sts)
Row 3: 2dc in first st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in last st, 1ch. (7 sts)
Row 4: 1dc in each of next 6 sts, 1dc and 1tr in last st, 1ch. (8 sts)
Row 5: 2dc in first st, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, 1ch. (9 sts)
Row 6: 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 1htr in next st, 1tr, 1dtr, 1tr in next st, 1htr in next st, 1dc in next st, 1htr, 1tr. 2dtr in last st. (13 sts)
Do not fasten off.

Wing edging
3dc in last st of Row 6 (makes corner). Work down wings as foll: 1dc in base of last dtr from prev round, 2dc, ss into dip, 4dc to next corner, 3dc in corner st, 6dc to next corner, 3dc in
corner st, 3dc, ss into dip, 5dc, ss into next dip, 4dc, ss into first dc. Fasten off.

legs (make 2)
Using B, make 10ch, 1htr in fourth ch from hook.
Fasten off.

Making up
Weave ends through last 6 sts of head to close. Sew body and ears to head. Attach wings three rows behind head. Sew legs to underside of body. Cut circle of brown felt and two smaller ones in black. Sew black circles onto brown and then sew onto nose. Embroider mouth in B. Cut four fangs in white felt and sew in place.
