Briggs & Little Heritage 2-ply (100 g) yarn:
1 (1, 2) skein(s) MC
Small amount of CC
One pair 4.00 mm needles OR whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
Tapestry needle

Tension:
18 sts and 27 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) in St st. Work to the exact tension with the specified yarn to obtain satisfactory results.

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK TENSION.

To make:

Note: When knitting border pattern, it will be necessary to break CC yarn to bring yarn to correct end of needle. The coloured design is worked by carrying yarn not in use loosely across back of work, but never over more than 3 sts. Over more than 3 sts, weave it over and under colour in use on next st or at centre of sts it passes over. When changing colours, in order to prevent a hole, pass colour to be used under and around to right of colour just used.

Beg at cuff edge, with MC, cast on 90 (100,110) sts. Work 2 rows in (k1, p1) ribbing.

Beg with a k row, work in St st, following Border Design Graph.

With MC, work 3 rows St st. Cuff has now been completed.

Picot edge (cuff fold line)
[K2 tog, yon] across row, ending with k2 tog. 89 (99,109) sts now on needle.

To make remainder of hat:
K 1 row, dec 3 (5,7) sts evenly across row. 86 (94,102) sts now on needle. Beg with a p row, work in St st until work from beg measures 24 (26,27) cm/9-1/2 (10-1/4,10-1/2) ins, ending with a p row.

To shape crown:
Row 1: K2 tog across row.
Row 2: P1, [p2 tog] to end of row.
Row 3: Rep Row 1. Break yarn. Thread end through rem sts. Draw up and fasten securely.

To finish:
Weave in yarn ends on wrong side of work. Steam lightly through a damp cloth. Sew seam. Turn cuff to outside.

To make pom-pom:
With MC, wind yarn over 4 fingers 75 times. Remove from fingers and thread lend through circle of yarn and tie tightly. Cut through loops at each side. Trim to desired size. Sew to top of hat.
