Knit and felt a Christmas stocking

By Sara Lucas and Allison Isaacs

This homemade knitted and felted Christmas stocking will add a cosy touch to your holiday decor.
Knitted and felted Christmas stocking: Materials
This knitted and felted Christmas stocking is inspired by a style my grandmother used to make with machine-made felt. In fact, it is a more elegant version of the stocking my father hangs to this day.

Finished size
6-1/2" wide at cuff, 14" cuff to heel, 11" foot length

You need:

• Jo Sharp DK Wool (100% wool; 50 g = 107 yds): 3 balls main colour (MC) White 301 and 1 ball each contrast colour 1 (CC1) Moss 012 and contrast colour 2 (CC2) Pistachio 002
• Size 8 (5 mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
• Crochet hook size D or E (3.25 or 3.5 mm)
• Sewing needle and thread

Gauge
• Prefelting: 8 sts and 10 rows per 2 inches in St st
• Postfelting: 10 sts and 14-1/2 rows per 2 inches (this gauge is more important)

To make:
You will make two sides and sew them together after felting. The two sides need to be mirror images of each other and the easiest way to achieve this is to start one side with a knit row, and one side with a purl row. That way, the same row count works for both sides. This will mean that on one side, the RS will be St st and the toe edge of the stocking will be at the beginning of a knit row. On the other side, the RS will be Rev St st and the toe edge will be at the beginning of a purl row.

With MC, CO 33 sts. Work in St st (or Rev St st) for 64 rows.

Shape foot
To shape the foot, increases and decreases will be made on both the heel edge and the toe edge. Mark the toe edge with a contrast colour yarn or split ring marker, if desired.

Row 65 (start toe shaping): CO 1, K to end of row.
Work 2 rows even.

Row 68: P to last 2 sts, Pf&b, P1.
Row 69: CO 1, K to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows 2 more times.

Row 74: P to last 2 sts, Pf&b, P1.
Row 75: CO 2, K to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows once more.

Row 82: P even.
Row 83: CO 1, K to end of row.
Work 3 rows even.
Row 87: CO 1, K to end of row.
