Knit these cute baby blocks

Here's a great knitting pattern for soft and cute baby blocks. They'll make the little one in your life very happy!
Practice your cabling technique while knitting up these bite-size charts. For variety – and to use up scrap yarn! – why not make the face of each block in a different color?

Materials
• Plymouth Yarn Company Encore DK (75% acrylic/25% wool; each approximately 13⁄4 oz/50g and 150 yd/137m), 1 ball for each baby block (sample projects were made in #1201 Pale Green, #793 Light Blue, and #896 Petal Yellow),  light/DK
• One pair of size 6 (4mm) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
• Two stitch markers
• Two cable needles
• Blunt-end yarn needle
• Upholstery foam, cut to size

Gauge
22 stitches and 31 rows = 4" (10cm) in Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern. Each square measures 4" (10cm) square. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Stitch patterns
Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern
(any number of stitches)
Row 1 (RS): Purl across.
Row 2: Knit across.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for pattern.
Motif A (9 sts – inc to 15 sts) – See chart.
Motif B (13 sts – inc to 19 sts) – See chart.
Motif C 13 sts – inc to 21 sts) – See chart.

Square A (Make 2)
Cast on 23 stitches.

Begin Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern, and work even until the piece measures approximately 1⁄2" (13mm) from the beginning, ending after a wrong-side row.

Set up patterns
Next Row (RS): Work Row 1 of Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern over the first 7 stitches, place marker, work Row 1 of Motif A over the next 9 stitches, place marker, work Row 1 of Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern over the next 7 stitches.

Continue even in patterns as established until Row 23 of Motif A chart has been completed.

Beginning with a wrong-side row, continue even in Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern until the piece measures approximately 4" (10cm) from the beginning.

Bind off.

Square B (make 2)
Cast on 23 stitches.

Begin Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern, and work even until the piece measures approximately 3⁄4" (2cm) from the beginning, ending after a wrong-side row.

Set up patterns
Next Row (RS): Work Row 1 of Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern over the first 5 stitches, place marker, work Row 1 of Motif B over the next 13 stitches, place marker, work Row 1 of Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern over the next 5 stitches.

Continue even in patterns as established until Row 20 of Motif B chart has been completed.

Beginning with a right-side row, continue even in Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern until the piece measures approximately 4" (10cm) from the beginning.

Bind off.

Square C (make 2)
Cast on 23 stitches.

Begin Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern, and work even until the piece measures approximately 3⁄4" (2cm) from the beginning, ending after a wrong-side row.

Set Up Pattern

Next Row (RS): Work Row 1 of Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern over the first 5 stitches, place marker, work Row 1 of Motif C over the next 13 stitches, place marker, work Row 1 of Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern over the next 5 stitches.

Continue even in patterns as established until Row 18 of Motif C chart has been completed.

Beginning with a right-side row, continue even in Reverse Stockinette Stitch Pattern until the piece measures approximately 4" (10cm) from the beginning.

Bind off.

Finishing
With the right sides facing, sew 5 faces of block together, placing matching squares on opposite sides of the block. Insert the foam block, position the last face of block, and sew the last four seams.
