Knitted patchwork quilt: 1
I am always jealous of quilters. All that colour and pattern... but I am useless with scissors and not much better with a sewing machine. So I designed this knitted version and I adore it. Making a quilt is a little more complicated than a traditionally knitted blanket, so be sure to read the notes before beginning.

Take a look at a larger image of the quilt.

Materials
• Laika by Bouton d'Or (100% wool; 50 g = 54 yds) 5 balls, 4 balls, 5 balls. Shown in Cream = 514 Reflet, Blue = 864 Arbuste, Grey = 503 Rocher.
• Size 10 (6 mm) needles or size to obtain gauge (1 square must be knit with circular or double pointed needles but the rest can be done with straights)
• Darning needle
• Fabric for backing and sewing materials (optional) -- see notes and assembly section
• Size J (6 mm) crochet hook

Gauge
15 sts and 16 rows per 4 inches in St st

32 x 28 inches

To make
Always use the long-tail cast on for these pieces.
If you aren't going to back your quilt, you can knit it in strips instead of squares. This way, the only seams will be those between the strips. (Of course, you may want to do this even if you are going to back it.) Just work the patches according to the chart below, starting at the bottom.
