A nude lip is seasonless, versatile and easy to maintain throughout the day (unlike a high maintenance red). Good news: it’s super easy to wear. Bad news: it’s tricky finding one that compliments your skin tone while working with your natural lip colour. We chatted with Make Up For Ever artist and national educator, Dannica Lamoureux, for tips and tricks on how to wear—and find—a nude lip colour that works for you.
First things first, it’s important to know the undertone of your skin when shopping for a nude lip colour. That means knowing whether you have pink or yellow in your skin. If you are someone who burns easily under the sun, you most likely have pink undertones, no matter if you have a fair or medium colouring, says Lamoureaux. On the other hand, if you are someone who tans under the sun, you probably have yellow undertones. She suggests those with pink undertones should lean towards something with a rosy hint while those who are more olive (with yellow undertones) should go for something with a trace of peach or bronze.
Another important thing to keep in mind is the shade; the kiss of death is choosing a lipstick that’s the same colour as your skin. “It should always be a tiny bit darker than what your skin is and one to three shades deeper than your natural lip tone,” says Lamoureaux. However, if you are someone who has a prominent natural lip tone, it might alter the colour of the lip product. She suggests using waterproof concealer to neutralize your lip before applying the colour. You can also match your nude to your cheeks for a soft monochromatic look. “If you’re wearing pink blush, try a nude with a hint of pink. If you’re wearing bronzer, go with something that has peachy brown in it,” says Lamoureaux.
A nude lip also has the power to bestow your lips with a fuller looking pout. But in order to get those plumping benefits your need to be choosy about finish—lip gloss is your best bet. “Apply your gloss to the center of the lips where you want the most volume. Then, lightly drag it to the outer corner,” says Lamoureaux. “A shimmery gloss will add attention by reflecting light.” Mature lips can also benefit from this trick. She says the best product is a creamy nude lipstick, “It hides any kind of texture on the lips.”
Another way to add volume to the lips is using a lip liner to overdraw them. “Keep your overdrawn lip natural by making sure you’re still touching your natural lip line but going above it by just one pencil stroke,” says Lamoureaux. If you want to go for a matte look, you can fill in your lips with that same liner. For an even more long-lasting matte finish, Lamoureaux suggests pressing finishing powder on the lips.
Two products Lamoureaux can’t live without are the Make Up For Ever Lip Line Perfector ($24) to prevent feathering and smooth texture, and the Make Up For Ever Glossy Full ($23) plumping gloss to circulate blood to the lips for a big, juicy pout.
You can't go wrong with the Color Sensational The Buffs; it's a collection of just nudes. They're richly pigmented, moisturizing and there's a shade for everyone.
If you find liquid lipsticks drying, then Soft Matte Lip Creams are perfect for you. They have a mousse texture and dry to a moisturizing matte finish. Plus, the shades Rome, Berlin and Dubai (L-R) are amazing nudes for deep/dark skins.
These lip glosses pack a punch when it comes to pigment. Wear this instead of lipstick for a big, juicy pout. Whether you get cream finish or shimmer, you will have rich colour and the nudes are perfect for medium-dark skintones. Our picks are Bronzed, Warm Bronze, Kristen and Tara (L-R).
The two nudes lipsticks are universally flattering because of their neutral undertones. They're also matte but super comfortable on the lips. Shade M100 (L) works for lighter skinstones while M101 (R) is perfect for medium and darker tones.
It's hard finding nudes for pale skintones but the Amuse Bouche line does it right with shades Honeycomb and Meringue (L-R). These natural and organic lipsticks are super hydrating thanks to the blend of natural oils. Perfect for mature lips as the creaminess will mask any texture.
This cult-classic lip plumper is now available in a range of different colours. We love Angel Kisses, Milk Shake and Spice Girl (L-R). These sheer glosses are perfect to wear on their own or on top of a lipstick or liner for ultra volume on the lips.

1. Something red
The easiest—and most affordable—way to inject life into your wardrobe is to incorporate the season's "it" colour: red. If you're feeling brave, try a head-to-toe fiery monochromatic look; the colour-averse can insert a touch of crimson into a dark ensemble for an instant update.
2. Glossy finishes
High-shine patent isn't relegated only to accessories; look for it on skirts, shirts and even coats. We especially like the shiny finish when it's embellished with faux fur or a ruffled trim for softness.

3. Ladylike pinstripes
Pinstripes are making a comeback, and we're not talking about ill-fitting suits from the '80s. This fall, menswear motif makes a powerful statement in womenswear. A tailored shirtdress balances masculine and feminine elements.
4. Velvet textures
This fall, everything from slouchy blazers to wide-legged trousers has been remade in elegant velvet. Equal parts chic and comfy, this fabric is irresistibly soft.
5. Puffer jackets
These toppers are fall's reigning outerwear trend. Juxtapose the utilitarian look with a dressy frock or, for warmth, layer it under a jacket. Fashion meets function!
6. Embellished treasures
Bold embellishments such as sequins, paillettes and colourful embroidery aren't just for eveningwear this autumn. The trick to tempering statement pieces (and making them office-friendly) is to pair them with modest separates, such as an accordian-pleated midi skirt and Mary Jane pumps.
7. Breton stripes
Black-and-white stripes stormed the fall runways. The standout style? A winterized French-striped dress. Add edge to the look with faux-leather leggings or elevate with a charming tweed blazer.
