  • Portion size 24 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold butter cubed
  • 1/4 cup sliced hazelnut
Filling:
  • 1 pkg (375 g) date
  • 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice

Method

Filling: In saucepan, stir together 2 cups (500 mL) water, dates, sugar and lemon and orange juices; let stand for 30 minutes. Bring to boil; reduce heat to medium and boil gently, stirring often, until thickened, 10 minutes. Let cool.

In large bowl, whisk together oats, flour, sugar, orange rind and salt; cut in butter until mixture is in coarse crumbs.

Press half of oat mixture evenly into 8-inch (2 L) square parchment paper–lined metal cake pan; spread with date mixture.

Toss remaining oat mixture with hazelnuts; sprinkle over date mixture, pressing lightly.

Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven until light golden, about 45 minutes. Let cool on rack before cutting into squares. (Make-ahead: Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days or overwrap with heavy-duty foil and freeze for up to 2 weeks.)
