Make this tasty hamburger as is or with with any of the Flavour Perks (see below). Top with your favourite topping or any of the Terrific Toppings.
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp water, tomato_juice, stock or red_wine
- 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard, hot mustard or prepared horseradish
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp each salt and pepper
- 1 lb lean ground beef, pork, lamb, veal, turkey or chicken
Preparation
In bowl, beat egg with water; stir in bread crumbs, onion, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Add beef; mix just until combined. Shape into four 3/4-inch (2 cm) thick patties. (Make-ahead: Wrap, separated by waxed paper, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours or freeze for up to 1 month; thaw in refrigerator.)
Place on greased grill over medium heat; close lid and grill, turning once, until no longer pink inside and digital thermometer inserted sideways into centre reads 160°F (71°C), about 15 minutes.

Flavour Perks
To The Basic Burger, add one of the following.
1 tsp (5 mL) crumbled dried oregano, thyme or rosemary or 1 tbsp (15 mL) minced fresh herbs.
2 tsp (10 mL) Cajun seasoning, chili powder or other favourite spice mix.
1 fresh or pickled jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced.
1/4 cup (50 mL) minced fresh parsley, coriander, chives or green onions.
1 tbsp (15 mL) grated gingerroot.
2 tbsp (25 mL) pesto.
1 tsp (5 mL) Worcestershire sauce and/or 1/4 tsp (1 mL) hot pepper sauce.
