Things you should know about strawberries:

Your neighbourhood markets are brimming with local strawberries this time of year, and the berries are bursting with more than just flavour. In a one-cup (250 millilitre) serving, you’ll get an array of health benefits, including:

• an impressive mix of antioxidants – powerful disease-fighting phytochemicals, including anthocyanins and ellagic acid (researchers measuring the antioxidant content of about 1,000 common foods ranked strawberries in the top 30);

• 100 per cent of your daily recommended intake of vitamin C; and

• three grams of fibre, plus folate, potassium and other nutrients. All of this for only 50 calories per serving.
