Have a mini movie night. Invite your child's friends over (5 to 8 p.m., pj's optional). Use a favourite flick as inspiration – serve Finding Nemo fish cakes, for example, or Disney Princess cupcakes.

When sap starts to run, head out to the sugar bush to make maple syrup – many nature centres offer programs. Canada is famous worldwide for its pure maple syrup, so pour it on your kids' pancakes and ice cream.

Pretend you're a tourist and revisit your kids' favourite local attractions
(or check out ones you've never seen). It's a fun way to fake a vacation. If you can spring for a night in a hotel with a pool, even better.

Ride the rails. Kids love trains. Take a short locomotive ride in your neck of the woods, build a model train set or visit a train museum.
