Humans of NY: True stories about real people

A few weeks ago a friend suggested I follow someone on Instagram. "You'll love this feed," she said. "This is the kind of stuff you're always talking about!" My curiosity kicked in and I started following @HumansOfNY on Instagram, and I soon fell into a beautiful vortex that I can't seem to get enough of. The tagline for the account explains it all: New York City, one story at a time. And that's exactly how it goes -- the photographer, Brandon Stanton,  wanders around New York City and interacts with different, everyday people. He then takes a photo of them and captions it with a fact from their interaction. It's usually a little glimpse into the individual; something they've said during the interview that captured his attention. These facts can range from personal anecdotes about how they ended up in New York City to deeper reveals about their pasts and their families. Needless to say, it's a beautiful account filled with lovely tales, usually in 50 words or less, about the unique and vibrant individuals who make up one of our planet's biggest cities. These true accounts tug at the heartstrings and remind us that we're all just stories waiting to be told. Every experience in an individual's life makes up who he or she is, and every person we encounter is an opportunity to learn about someone new. Here are a couple of screengrabs from the @HumansOfNY Instagram account that I enjoy.

When was the last time you had an in-depth conversation with a stranger?
