Wear this, not that: Snakeskin heels

Fall's runways brought the snakeskin trend to life and now we're seeing the python print making its way to retailers. I'm both strangely drawn to and repelled by snakeskin. The reason I'm a wee bit iffy on this scaly skin is because when it's worn the wrong way – like a printed denim – it can look tacky and cheap, fast! Let's just say snakeskin can be a slippery slope to fashion victimhood. That being said, when worn correctly in a classic accessory, snakeskin can elevate any outfit, making it look rich, luxe and oh-so covetable. I believe that's the key rule to wearing the slithering print – going classic and simple helps shed the bad rap typically given to this print. shoeswearthisnothat
  • WEAR THIS: Court shoe with snakeskin pattern, Zara, $100.
  • NOT THAT: Snakeskin ankle boot, Zara, $100.
Take these shoes, for instance. Both styles are from the fast-fashion giant Zara, and although the prices and manufacturing match, they are not equals. The grey and white python-print pumps on the left have a timeless shape and would work in all seasons, and their traditional neutral skin goes with everything in your closet. The heel height is sensible and the toe shape is a fine balance between round and triangular – it hits the sweet spot and still guarantees to make legs look lean and lengthy without the pizza-toe effect. As for the booties on the right, they rub me in all the wrong ways. Like a real python, these shoes would squeeze the life out of any outfit. For starters, the heel – it's way too itty-bitty in both height and width. And I dislike the sharpness of the toe, especially when paired with the random tongue that sits at the top of the opening. They look like gangster cowboy boots meet Gino meets My Fair Lady – there's just too much going on in all the wrong places. Are you into snakeskin footwear? Or are you going to let this trend slither past you?
