Hairstyle makeover: Update your look with a modern bob

When Maria Cipriano, 45, sat down for her consultation at Solo Bace salon in Toronto, she was cool, calm and collected. For 23 years she had been colouring her hair the same black shade using drugstore dyes.

What she wanted

Maria figured that after two decades of having the same hairstyle, a major change was in order. She handed over all creative control, giving the team carte blanche – a dream makeover subject!

Before and after: Take a look at Maria before and after her makover.

What she got: Colour
Darrell Walsh, colourist at Solo Bace, faced was lifting the black pigment out of Maria's mane. Because Maria had so many layers of black, Walsh had to make a few colour-removing concoctions of different intensities.

"The colour is much darker and harder to lift at the ends because of the years of buildup,” explains Walsh. After three colour-lifting treatments, her hair was finally ready to take on a new hue. A warm chocolate brown was applied all over, then Walsh strategically placed caramel highlights around her face, and pumped up the shine with a gloss sealer.

What she got: Cut
"I haven't visited a proper salon in over 20 years," says Maria. Recently, Maria's mom had been moonlighting as her personal hairdresser, maintaining the style she'd had since the early '90s.

"Maria needs to put life and movement back into the hair," says Solo Bace stylist Paul Pereira, who started by chopping off almost 10 inches. Pereira then reshaped Maria's hair into a shoulder-length line bob with a few longer layers.

His secret to creating a modern bob is to allow the hair to fall naturally while still giving the cut a strong shape. "This ensures that Maria won't have to spend a lot of time styling and maintaining it," explains Pereira. His finishing touch was giving Maria a rounded fringe to frame her features.

Verdict

"I loved the change right away!" Maria says. "I was shocked at how calm I felt after Paul cut off the initial chunk of hair," she explains. "I had no feelings of remorse or panic. Instead I left liberated!"
