4 Signs Your Skin Is Losing Collagen (+ How To Slow It Down)

Is your skin losing elasticity and plumpness? Collagen could be to blame.

Collagen is one of today's biggest skincare buzzwords. Why? “It's the most abundant structural protein in the skin,” says Dr. Katie Beleznay, at Humphrey & Beleznay Cosmetic Dermatology in Vancouver, B.C.

Types I and III of collagen—both found in the dermis—support firmness and elasticity in the skin. As we age, collagen production decreases in quality and quantity. “Starting in your mid-to-late twenties, it is estimated you lose about one percent of your collagen per year,” says Dr. Beleznay.

Hormonal shifts from menopause, UV exposure, pollution, and smoking can all accelerate this loss. While collagen loss occurs gradually—so slowly that you may not observe any noticeable changes for a long time—there are telltale signs that production is decreasing.

Signs of collagen loss

Collagen loss can manifest in the skin in several ways, making the skin appear less full and plump overall. These are the most recognizable signs:

  • Appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loss of firmness or sagging
  • Dullness or texture
  • Dry or dehydrated skin

Can you slow collagen loss?

While we can’t entirely stop collagen loss, there are preventative measures we can take to slow the process down. Wearing sunscreen and not smoking are two key ways to preserve existing collagen, says Dr. Beleznay.

How to improve collagen production

Once you hit the age threshold where that production starts to decrease, you may consider incorporating collagen-boosting products into your skincare rotation. “Retinoids are the gold standard in helping to stimulate collagen,” says Dr. Beleznay. Topical retinoids can be found in over-the-counter and prescription products. Vitamin C, glycolic acid, and some peptides have also been found to increase collagen production, she says. Some evidence also suggests that taking hydrolyzed collagen peptides supplements can reduce wrinkles and improve skin elasticity.

If you want to dig deeper, there are a number of in-office treatments that stimulate collagen, including lasers, microneedling, radiofrequency, and injectable regenerative biostimulators.
