These 5 Countries Are The World’s Best Destinations For Adventure Travel

It's time to pack up your beach chair—vacations are changing.

Holidays are becoming about what you can do, not just what you can see. A recent UK study found that 90 percent of people surveyed are ready to explore and willing to pay for it. Think hiking, nature, water access, and diverse landscapes. It’s not just about hanging out at the beach anymore.

Outdoor outfitter KÜHL wanted to delve deeper into this research and discover where people can go to access adventure. They created the Global Outdoor Destination Index, a data-driven ranking of the world’s best countries for outdoor adventure travel.

KÜHL assessed 183 countries based on 12 different metrics, including how much coastline a place has, the total area of forest, whether natural areas are protected, weather, and more.

Standout Countries

Australia ranks number one overall, with its focus on preservation, its beautiful climate, and the variety of activities it offers.

Malta has the most outdoor activities relative to its size.

Mexico leads in landscape richness, boasting a diverse array of natural ecosystems.

Luxembourg is top for peace, safety, and climate comfort.

The Top 5 Countries For Outdoor Adventure

While all of the above countries excelled in certain categories, the top five combine space, access, safety, and promise an unforgettable vacation.

What Makes Canada A Top Destination For Adventure Travel?

Glaciers, forests, the Arctic plains—all of these uninterrupted pieces of wilderness make Canada worthy of a visit for exploration and adventure. It’s because there is so much untouched and undeveloped land to explore that Canada ranks so highly. Twelve percent of the land is protected, and there are 11 UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites.

KÜHL found over 1,280 documented outdoor activities, including ice climbing, polar bear tracking, and heli-skiing. In provinces like Alberta and British Columbia, these activities are the most accessible and encouraged as part of the culture.

Canada ranked within the top 20 countries for peace and comfort, meaning your next adventure will be a safe one.
