Under $100: Best buys for September

September is commonly referred to as the start of the fashion year, so it's no surprise that this month's under $100 picks reviving, revamping and adding a few notable trends to our wardrobes.

Sustainable staples

null

Everlane High-Rise Skinny Jean, $68USD, everlane.com.

Everlane is one of the brightest spots in the retail market thanks to a combination of their basic but well-made pieces and the brand’s commitment to environmentally-friendly, sustainable and transparent business practices. Which makes its foray into denim that much more exciting (denim being a notoriously ecologically damaging industry). At just $68 (about $85 Canadian) you can shop denim in three styles (High-Rise, Mid-Rise or Boyfriend) that is made at the world’s cleanest denim factory. Considering most denim is well above $100, and isn’t made with an eye to sustainability, we’ll call this purchase a feel-good steal.

Riri does beauty

null

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna from $20 to 42, sephora.ca.

As beauty editors, we get plenty of beauty samples sent to us, daily. However, the one line we’re sitting on pins and needles to try is Fenty Beauty. Earlier this month Rhianna launched her much-anticipated makeup line, a project she started working on about two years ago and the results are a 91 product collection which launched in 17 countries on September 7th. Some of the highlights from the line include 40 shades of medium-to-full coverage foundations ($42 each), Match Sticks which come in 20 matte and 10 shimmer shades ($31 each), Invismatte Blotting papers ($20) and her Freestyle Highlighter at $42.

Haute hat

null

Felted wool fedora, $30, hm.com/ca.

Sweaters aren’t the only hallmark of the fall season, so are hats. They punctuate a look, combat the cold while protecting your from the sun and most importantly help disguise bad hair days. We adore this chic navy, black and burgundy fedora hat—its styling options are truly endless.

Clean slate

null

Consonant Skincare Natural Foaming Face Wash, $22, consonantskincare.com.

I’m usually all about the oil and cream cleansers, so colour-me-shocked when I fell hard for this cult-favourite foaming cleanser. From Canadian all-natural brand Consonant Skincare, this cleanser offers serious results, which is a lot to say about a cleanser. Tea Tree Oil and Grape Seed Oil help hydrate and fight blemishes, makeup is removed easily and completely and the best part is that it won’t dry out your skin like other foamy soap cleansers.

Plaid please

null

Plaid Pullover Shirt Dress, $40, oldnavy.ca.

If there’s one print that fall in Canada just seems to call for, it’s plaid. Which is why I’ll be picking up a simple plaid shirtdress to wear with tights, jeans and oversized sweaters everywhere from the office to the apple orchard.

Smells expensive

null

Tiffany & Co. Eau de Parfum, $100, tiffany.com.

Smelling expensive is just as sought after as looking expensive, right? The iconic jewellery house of Tiffany & Co. is launching their first new scent in 15 years later this month. The opening note is mandarin orange while the heart of the fragrance is iris with a base of patchouli and musk.

Simplicity

null

Signet Ring, $75, melanieauld.ca.

My love of simple jewellery usually leans more toward delicate than statement-making. And while a signet ring isn’t quite as eye-catching as gemstones or diamonds, the typically-men’s-design has me embracing something a bit more weighty—putting this ring firmly on my fall wishlist.

Frizz free

null

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine, $7, shoppersdrugmart.ca.

My constant hair battle is with frizz. No matter the season, my hair has a tendency to get frizzy and unkempt without a bit of help. Which is why I’ve been relying on this serum to keep my locks shiny in this transitional weather. Unlike other oil serums, this one is super lightweight and doesn’t leave my ends greasy, and despite the sleek name, this works just as well with my natural wave as it does with a blowout.

Red is best

null

Fine-knit sweater, $30, hm.com.

Red is THE colour of fall, so I’ll be embracing the hue and the cooler temperatures with a sweater in this stand out colour.

Solid foundation

null

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup SPF 30, $42, esteelauder.com.

My biggest complaint when it comes to foundation is that it tends to leave my skin feeling dry—especially when colder weather rolls around. So I’ll be spending a bit more on this Estee Lauder foundation that boasts water-retaining ingredients like watermelon, lychee seed and apple. Light coverage that feels like I’m not wearing anything? Yes please.

Heading west

null

Eyelet ruffle shirt, $85, gapcanada.ca.

If, like me, you’re hesitant about going full cowboy when it comes to the western trend, try picking up a blouse with subtle western-inspired detailing like bandana prints, high necks or micro frills.

Detail oriented

null

Expression Five-Orb Drop Earrings, $10.50, thebay.com.

These shoulder-grazing danglers bring an elevated dose of bling to any outfit. Add a golden kick to your look with these baubles from Hudson’s Bay private jewellery label: Expression. You can't beat their prices!

Knitting pretty

null

Oversized sweatshirt, $20, zara.com.

Sweater weather has arrived across much of Canada—and this season’s batch of sweaters are far from basic. From fair isle to argyle patterns and everything in between there’s something for everyone. I’m a sucker for anything with a stripe so I’m partial to this oversized striped sweater from Zara.

10 fall fashion trends you can wear (and shop!) now

Trend: Red

It's pretty easy to spot when a colour becomes trends—and no colour dominated the runway more than bright, saturated red. It was seen in all textures, shapes and styles and graced the collections of Oscar de la Renta (pictured), Givenchy and Armani to name a few.

Trend: Sparlky footwear

Don't be fooled by these look-at-me boots—metallic is a neutral that you shouldn't be afraid to wear at any time. Magpies were undoubtedly drawn to the runways of Chanel (pictured), Saint Laurent and J.Crew thanks to these goodies. Though the runways were full of sparkly silver boots, this trend doesn't need to be in an over-the-knee heel to be au courant. Pick a flat or shorter feel for a more subtle look, or pick up a pair of sandals to ride that summer wave into fall.

Trend: Western

This all-American style has been championed by some brands pretty consistently (looking at you Ralph Lauren), but this season definitely saw an increase in pointed lapels, rugged denim and cowboy-inspired footwear. Designers like Calvin Klein (pictured), Bally and Tommy Hilfiger hopped on the band wagon. The good news is you can wear this trend as subtly or as literally as you want—though we might recommend keeping your spurs at home.

Trend: Plaid

Plaid is a winter wardrobe staple here in Canada, but this season the likes of Jenny Packham (pictured) Chloe and Bottega Veneta gave us a muted take on the trend. Think greys, blues and washed out hues like yellow and green. Don't be afraid to wear this look in bigger pieces like dresses and coats.

Trend: Victorian necklines

Turtlenecks have reigned supreme for a few winter seasons, but it's time to get a bit creative with your high-neck shirts, blouses and sweaters. The runway saw a more Victorian-inspired approach to covering your decollete thanks to designers like Valentino (pictured), Frame and Beaufille. Mock-neck blouses, frilled turtlenecks and pussy-bow shirts will keep you prim and proper all season long.

Trend: Wide belts

If there's any accessory that will give you an immediate hourglass figure, it's a wide belt worn at the waist. This season-less pick was seen at Isabel Marant (pictured), Michael Kors and Adam Selman and was worn over dresses, denim, chunky knits and outwear—making it the most versatile accessory in your wardrobe this season.

Trend: Vintage florals

Flowers are pretty much in vogue year-round, season after season. But this year we saw retro florals that looked as if they could be ripped from the couches and curtains of your childhood. Anything goes when it comes to shape, colour and style—runways like Mulberry (pictured), Emilia Wicksted and Ralph Lauren gave us lots of options. Just make sure there's a certain sense of nostalgia to your look.

Trend: Polka dots

The nice thing about polka dots is that they can work with almost anyone's style. Ladylike? There's a polka dot for that. Minimal, graphic, girly, retro? There's definitely a polka dot for those too. This year, shop the trend in every size from teeny tiny to oversized and gather inspiration from runway shows like Loewe (pictured), Maison Margiela and Zimmerman.
