Splurge vs. Save: Hair Care

When it comes to hair products, how do you get the most bang for your buck? We got the lowdown from the pros about what may be overrated, and what buys are really worth your hard-earned cash.

Splurge

“Investing in a quality heat protectant and conditioning mask is crucial for safeguarding and nourishing the hair,” says Sarah Attivi, hairstylist and expert educator for hair-care brand DesignMe. These products help to preserve hair health over time, making them well worth the splurge.

When it comes to hot tools, “you get what you pay for,” says Attivi. Investing in higher-quality straighteners, dryers and curling irons helps preserve the integrity of hair and prevents damage caused by “hot spots” (areas on a hot tool that overheat, burning the hair) on low-quality tools, she says. In the same vein, investing in a salon appointment when bleaching your locks or undergoing a drastic colour change is worth the investment to prevent unnecessary damage that can occur when you DIY.

Save

“Avoid excessive spending on bond-building treatments,” Attivi says, “because not all hair needs them.” Instead, focus on finding hair-care products that are adapted to the unique needs of your hair, whether that’s additional moisture, oil control or anything in between. The good news: There’s no shortage of affordable options when it comes to shampoos and conditioners that will bring these hair-loving benefits at a great price point.
