A Luxury Boutique Retreat on Mexico's Caribbean Coast

If you're searching for the best place to stay in Tulum that offers luxury without the party scene, The Beach Hotel Tulum and its sister property, Cabañas Tulum Beach Hotel & Spa, should be at the top of your list.

Over the past 10 years, Tulum has become a hotspot for electronic music festivals and party-goers. There’s always a beat you can tune into and a dance party worth attending. But there’s also luxe side to this historic city where rest and relaxation reign supreme.

The Beach Tulum Hotel and Cabañas Tulum Beach Hotel & Spa are located next to each other along the city’s main beach road, but you’ll feel like you’re in a private retreat…and you technically are.

The Beach Tulum Hotel: Adults-Only Beachfront Accommodations

This adults-only boutique hotel has just 28 rooms, all facing the white sand beach. Choose from either a ground-floor Deluxe Room with a plunge pool and direct access to the beach, a Junior Suite with a plunge pool and private poolside bed, or our personal favourite, the Beachfront Rooftop Room with a balcony and private rooftop, beautiful sunset views, and a hot tub and lounge chairs.

The grand lobby features a pool table, a library full of beachside-ready reads, cozy couches, and even tables where we’re told people often work remotely (wink, wink).

The sprawling pool winds through the property—and by every ground-floor room. The lounge chairs and green foliage offer a genuinely different experience from that of the beachfront.

Cabañas Tulum Beach Hotel & Spa

A little more casual than its sister property, Cabañas has only 24 rooms, which you can access after a quick walk through the small lobby, lounge, and pool deck. Accommodations are swim-up style, rooftop, or beachfront here—each one has relaxing views that are steps away from soft white sand.

If you have a bigger party and want to book in, there’s a three-bedroom loft perfect for wedding weekends or birthday get-togethers. Guests must be 13 years of age or older to stay at Cabañas, offering families with older children a place to relax with an upscale atmosphere.

Hotel Amenities at The Beach Tulum & Cabañas

The two properties share most of the amenities. The beach areas are right beside each other, hotel guests can visit any of the restaurants, and the spa is located right in between the two buildings.

Nice to note: Both hotels are free of single-use plastics and feature Mexican-made soaps and body care products. Each room also comes with a beach tote (so you don’t need to pack your own!), a yoga mat, and a robe for each guest, as well a designated beach bed. You’ll find flip-flops over at The Beach Tulum too.

Naj Naay Spa

Climb up a flight of treehouse-inspired stairs, and you enter the serenity of Naj Naay. There's a complimentary 60-minute thermal circuit with sauna, steam room, hot pool, and cold plunge. You can book the contrast therapy circuit at the front desk, which is a private experience available free of charge to all guests.

The spa also offers a wide range of relaxing services, including massages, facials, and even traditional Mayan practices.

Yoga Palapa

With health at the core of Tulum’s values, there is, of course, a host of wellness classes available to guests. Join a complimentary yoga flow every morning at 9 a.m. and a new slate of breathwork and pilates options throughout the week for a fee. Each of these classes takes place at the Yoga Palapa, a rooftop room over at The Beach Hotel Tulum with views of the pool and jungle.

Restaurants & Refreshments

Breakfast served in your room and drinks at dinner

There are three restaurants between the two properties. Fresco’s is a healthy, casual spot with juicy smoothies, locally-sourced ingredients, and the freshest fish tacos. Breakfast is included with your stay, and this is where we ate every morning. The Yogurt and Berries, a chia and Greek yogurt bowl with fresh fruit and toasted coconut, with a side of the Amaranth and Coconut Pancakes, had a hold on me. Pro tip: You can order breakfast to your room/balcony or designated beach bed for no extra cost!

Ziggy's bar and lounge area with firepit

If you’re craving something a little more extravagant (or more Mexican-inspired), try Ziggy's Beach Club. You’ll most likely head here for drinks and/or dinner. It’s beachfront and has live music Tuesday-Sunday. There’s a beautiful bar with twinkle lights and rope swings, a more loungey fire pit area, and tables and chairs set up in the sand for when you’re ready to eat your meal. A few of the staff let us know the chilaquiles are not to be missed, and we had to order the Shrimp and Chipotle Sopes almost every night.

Bar Caracol is in the lobby of The Beach Hotel and serves citrus-forward margaritas and beachy libations to guests of the hotel pretty much anywhere you want, whenever you want.

The extras

Service

Every single employee we encountered during our stay was kind, thoughtful, and happy to help. Aldo was assigned to help us the entire time—checking in to make sure we had enough water, snacks, and towels, and even promised to let us know if any of the baby turtle nests in the area were about to hatch.

Both properties use WhatsApp for all communication, from ordering food to scheduling spa services. It's easy to use over the fast, free Wi-Fi, and it helps with handling any requests right away.

Off-site excursions

Chichén Itzá and a cenote

The team here is happy to set up a variety of off-site excursions. Being only a few hours away from Chichén Itzá, we had to take a tour of one of the designated “New Seven Wonders of the World.”

Our hotel-organized driver picked us up at 7 a.m. and arranged a private tour of the site with a local woman who grew up running around the ruins, playing hide-and-seek with her friends. And on the way home, we stopped at a quiet cenote (an underground cave-like structure) for a dip in mineral-rich water. This experience is a must for anyone visiting Tulum. It adds a little culture and history to your luxe beachside getaway, giving you the best of all the worlds. More tour options included the Mayan ruins of Coba, bird watching, and a visit to the UNESCO heritage site of Sian Ka'an Biosphere.
