Lip stains are the low-maintenance beauty staple you need

We rounded up the best lip tints for making your dreams of low-maintenance lip colour a reality.

Sure, a saturated swipe of lipstick is still on trend, but a growing category in cosmetics is lip stains. Whether you’re looking for juicy, long-lasting colour or a subtle matte ombré lip, we’ve got you covered.

Water Colours: Our picks for the most wearable and flattering lip stains.

Pixi Beauty GelTint & SilkGloss in BerryTint & SweetGloss, $20, shoppersdrugmart.ca. Covergirl Melting Pout Gel Liquid Lipstick in Gell Yes, $11, walmart.ca. Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in Flame Red, $18, sephora.ca. Buxom Powerplump Lip Balm in Flushed Berry, $21, sephora.ca. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Caro, $29, beautyboutique.ca. M.A.C Cosmetics Versicolour Stain in Let’s Stay Together, $28, maccosmetics.caImage by: Geoffrey Ross

SHADE FINDER

Just like lipsticks, stains come in every colour—but for summer, we’re feeling pinks. Find out which rosy tint works best for your skin tone.

Dior Dior Addict Lip Tattoo in Natural Pink, $36, sephora.ca. YSL Beauty Volupté Liquid Colour Balm in Undress Me Coral, $39, yslbeauty.ca. Lancôme Matte Shaker Liquid Lipstick in Power Pink, $30, lancome.ca.

For light skin: Fair skin with cool undertones looks best in bright candy-coloured pinks. Warm pink hues, like coral, are better suited for yellow undertones.

For olive skin: Almost any pink shade is a go, except those with a blue undertone, which can make olive complexions look dull.

For dark skin: Deep skin tones look radiant in bright pink, so go bold. Muted, neutral pinks can look washed out.

POUT PERFECTION

Simple steps to ensure you get that sultry just-bitten effect.

Step 1: Have dry lips? Start with a scrub. We love Bite Beauty’s Agave Sugar Lip Scrub ($20, sephora.ca); it exfoliates with pineapple enzymes and conditions with agave syrup. Work a small amount over your pout in circular motions to smooth.

Step 2: Plutino Group makeup artist Sheri Stroh recommends applying a balm before a tint. “To preserve a stain’s matte look, use a waxy lip balm that doesn’t have a lot of shine,” she says. It keeps dry skin at bay and gives the colour extra staying power.

Step 3: With stains, less is more. They should be layered on slowly and sparingly, so resist the urge to pile it on. “Apply it with your fingertip, dabbing it onto your lips,” says Stroh. “It softens everything and makes the stain look more lush.”

PICK YOUR POTION

Not sure if you’re a gel or powder kind of gal? Discover which tint formula will fulfill your beauty wants and needs.

Liquid: If you’re looking for a light-as-air tint that won’t transfer, try a water stain. This Clarins formula is 77 percent water, which leaves behind a tattoo-like finish. The colour is buildable—the more layers, the deeper the shade.

Clarins Water Lip Stain in Rose Water, $25, thebay.com.

Gel: If you love a stained pout but crave a wee bit more hydration, choose a gel formula. This one from Nudestix delivers moisture and major shine. Bonus: It’s a multitasker that can be used on cheeks as well as lips.

Nudestix Gel Color Lip + Cheek Balm in Rebel, $28, nudestix.ca.

Powder: Upon contact with the lips, powder stains become slightly creamy and smooth due to their hydrogel ingredients. “I like a powder lip with a really bare face—everything else simple,” says Stroh.

null

Joe Fresh Matte Cushion Lipstick in Exotic Bloom, $12, shoppersdrugmart.ca.

Balm: This hydrating balm-and-blush duo contains 100-percent-natural ingredients (95 percent of which are organic). It also has anti-aging benefits thanks to hyaluronic acid.

Tata Harper Volumizing Lip & Cheek Tint in Very Naughty, $48, tataharperskincare.com.

Amal Clooney at the MET Gala

Charlotte Tilbury herself prepped Amal Clooney for the MET Gala. She used a combo of best-selling Tilbury products (including the Instant Magic Dry Sheet Mask and Wonderglow Primer) to get Clooney's complexion glowing and then used the Eyes to Mesmerize eye palette to create that softly sparkling eye. But what we love the most is that orange-red lip! It's a mix of Hollywood Lips Matte Lipstick in Screen Siren and Walk of Fame. Beautiful!

Alicia Vikander at the Tomb Raider Premiere

Alicia Vikander, who stars in the Tomb Raider reboot (the role was originally played by Angelina Jolie), nailed her look at the film's European premiere. We love the stunning floral gown and fresh summery makeup—but can we talk about her hair? A simple low ponytail gets a great update by adding multiple elastics throughout. The perfect way for long-haired women to up their ponytail game.

How great does Mindy Kaling look? Her current press tour for A Wrinkle in Time is proving this start has serious red carpet style, and she continued that streak when she made an appearance at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party on March 4, 2018. We loved the juicy red lip she's sporting here, and paired with soft, boho waves, it's a perfectly glam look.

Rita Ora at the BRIT awards

There's so much to love about performer Rita Ora's look at the BRIT Awards this year. Those feathery lashes and bold brows. Her juicy, perfectly coral lip. But we have to say it's her curly, undone 'do that especially caught our eye. Ora proves that you don't need to be pristine and precise with your hair, even when it comes to formal events. Let loose and stay fun!

How luminous does Black Panther star Lupita Nyong'o look? While her fashion choices alone would have won us over (that colour! that necklace!), we also have to say that deep red lip, expertly groomed brows and a braided 'do are making this our look of the week.

Lorde at the 2018 Grammy Awards

We love a good tonal beauty look, and Lorde (aka Ella Yelich-O'Connor) wisely opted to match her statement lip to her stunning red dress. What we especially love about this look is how Lorde proves the power of a red lip even when everything else—her hair, complexion and eye makeup—is kept low key.
