Pizza

A flat circle of baked yeast dough, topped with ingredients, such as anchovies, artichoke hearts, one or more cheeses, chopped herbs and vegetables, olive oil, tomato or other sauce, and sliced meats, sausage or seafood. Certain combinations denote a particular style - chopped ham and pineapple, for example, are "Hawaiian." Pizzerias sprang up all over the world after Italian immigrants brought the dish to America, although it was not until the Second World War that it became well known throughout the rest of Italy. Today, pizza is found everywhere. See also deep-dish pizza.
